IPL 8: David Warner, Trent Boult Shine as Hyderabad Edge Past Punjab
Sunrisers Hyderabad scraped to 150/6 and then came back to defend the total against Kings XI Punjab at Mohali. David Warner played a crucial knock while Trent Boult was instrumental in stalling Punjab's chase.
Trent Boult bowled a fantastic spell
Asked to bat, opener Warner top-scored with a 41-ball 58 to lift Sunrisers to a modest 150 for six. The bowlers then produced a disciplined effort to restrict KXIP to 130 for nine in 20 overs, paving the way for the visiting side's third win of the season.
Boult returned with impressive figures of 3/19 in his four-over spell while Bhuvneshwar Kumar chipped in with two wickets. Wriddhiman Saha top-scored for KXIP with a 33-ball 42. (Scorecard)
Earlier, A Ashish Reddy smashed 22 off eight balls towards the end with the help of two last-over sixes, helping Sunrisers reach the 150-mark.
In reply, Kings XI Punjab, playing without the veteran Virender Sehwag, were jolted by the early loss of Manan Vohra and Shaun Marsh, both batsmen playing on against Boult and Kumar respectively to leave the visitors reeling at 13 for two in the fourth over.
Murali Vijay, after spending some time in the middle for his 12 runs, made his way back to the pavilion following a terrible mix-up with David Miller (15) while going for what seemed an unnecessary second run.
Around the half-way mark, bottom-placed Punjab were struggling at 61 for four, requiring 90 runs from 60 balls to climb up the ladder.
The hosts were dealt another body blow when leg-spinner Karn Sharma bagged the wicket of Miller who skied one to Boult at long off. With the required run rate shooting up, Miller got a leading edge while trying to hit Sharma down the ground.
Skipper George Bailey got out as his mishit found Sharma at mid off after the batsman made 22 off 16 balls with the help of three boundaries. At the other end, Saha was riding his luck as he got two lives. While Ravi Bopara could not latch on to a difficult one in the 15th over, Boult failed to judge one that went very high in the next over.
Saha and Axar Patel managed a few big hits to bring the equation down to 35 from the last three overs. However, Boult bowled Patel at the start of 18th over before getting the big wicket of Saha to dash KXIP's hopes of pulling off a win in their first home game of the season.
David Warner played a fire-brand knock!
Bailey opted to bowl first as the pitch had a good amount of grass on it, and his bowlers responded well. KXIP, who dropped Sehwag after a run of poor scores, ensured that the Sunrisers batsmen didn't get easy runs. Glenn Maxwell, too, missed out yet again on finding a place in the playing XI.
Young left-arm spinner Patel was the best bowler for KXIP, returning figures of 2/25, while Johnson picked up two wickets for 39 runs.
Apart from Warner, Moises Henriques (30) and Naman Ojha (28) were the other contributors for the visiting side, which struggled to cut loose. Warner found the fence 10 times and cleared it once during his stay in the middle.
Though Warner added 46 runs for the second wicket with Hanuma Vihari and Henriques had a 45-run fourth-wicket stand with Ojha, they were not big enough to trouble the hosts who had the crowd behind them.
Part-time bowler Murali Vijay bowled a tidy three-over spell, conceding just 16 runs, and that made things worse for Sunrisers. Anureet Singh, too, was economical as he gave away 27 runs in his full spell, including five runs in the innings' penultimate over.
Court admits Salman Khan's revision petition in arms case
A court in Rajasthan's Jodhpur on Monday called for the record of the subordinate court regarding the case relating to illegal possession and use of arms by Salman Khan on the Bollywood actor's revision plea.District and Sessions Judge, Jodhpur, Manoj Kumar Vyas, while admitting the revision petition moved by Salman for hearing, ordered summons of the record from the court of chief judicial magistrate and posted the matter on May 1 for detailed hearing.
Salman and a few other Bollywood actors were accused of poaching blackbucks on the midnight of October 1-2, 1998, during the shooting of Hindi movie "Hum Saath Saath Hain".
Accused of carrying and using illegal arms also as he allegedly had arms with expired licence and a case under Arms Act registered against him thereafter, the actor, through his advocate, moved an application before the CJM's court in Jodhpur on April 22 demanding re-examination of five witnesses of the case.
It was argued by Salman's counsel that after three eight-year-old applications of the prosecution were allowed and four witnesses examined a few days back, the scenario of the case has changed. However, this application came to be rejected by CJM on April 23.
Challenging the decision, the actor approached the district and sessions court.
"The district court has admitted our revision petition for hearing and the next date of hearing has been fixed on May 1," the actor's advocate Hastimal Sarswat told
The CJM court on April 23 had asked Salman to remain present before the court on April 29 for recording of his statement.Ranbir Kapoor: Yes, I am in love
He further added, "Yes, I am in love. I do feel responsible and have a sense of commitment. But the speculations regarding my wedding spoil the fun. You want to set a date and you want to celebrate. So I would really request that the media to stop speculating the date. I will not hide and get married because that doesn't make sense."
It remains to be seen now whether the media stops speculating about Ranbir's shaadi.

Nepal is not the big one: Next Himalayan earthquake maybe closer to home and far more serious
Even as the death toll from the 7.9 magnitude earthquake climbs to over 3,200 and stunned survivors struggle to come to terms with the magnitude of the disaster, experts say the worst is yet to come. The quake, which reduced large parts of Kathmandu to rubble, is not the 'great Himalayan quake' that the region has been bracing for.
Down To Earth magazine quoted Roger Bilham, geologist with the University of Colorado Boulder who studies the seismicity of the Himalayan area as saying, "At a magnitude of 7.9 on the Richter scale, the April 25 earthquake has caused devastation but it is not the anticipated “great Himalayan earthquake”. This does not qualify as a great earthquake which needs to be of magnitude 8".
And Prof Sankar Kumar Nath of IIT Kharagpur, who has studied seismic activity in the Himalayan region had an even more gloomy outlook.
“This earthquake would only be classified as medium in terms of energy released. That area, the 2500-km stretch from the Hindukush region to the end of Arunachal Pradesh, is capable of generating much bigger earthquakes, even nine on Richter scale,” he said. “If you look at it differently, we are actually lucky that only a 7.9-magnitude earthquake has come. I would be very happy to have a few 7.9-magnitude earthquakes than a 9-magnitude earthquake which would be absolute disaster. The trouble is that in terms of energy release, which is what causes the damage, it would take 40 to 50 earthquakes of magnitude 7.9 to avoid an earthquake of magnitude 9,” he told the Indian Express.
The last major earthquake (magnitude 8.4) occurred in 1934, killed an estimated 17,000 across both Nepal and India. Since then, researchers have been tirelessly studying the 'fault' lines of the last earthquake to predict the next one, but failed to do so, points out this article in IB Times.
Seismologist James Jackson, head of the earth sciences department at the University of Cambridge in England, was in Kathmandu just a week ago. Following the 7.9-magnitude earthquake, he told Associated Press that scientists knew "they were racing against the clock,".
Jackson, who was part of a 50-strong scientists and researchers team from across the world, said that the devastation would be huge not because of the size of the seismic activity, but because of population pressure and degradation of the environment.
And this has been one of the biggest issues in the region.
The exploding population in the region greatly increases the risk of casualties. The Times of India quotes from a study called the Himalayan Seismic Hazard, published in Science magazine in 2001:
"The population of India has doubled since the last great Himalayan earthquake in 1950 (in Assam). The urban population in the Ganges plain has increased by a factor of 10 since the 1905 earthquake, when collapsing buildings killed 19,500 people. Today, about 50 million people are at risk from great Himalayan earthquakes, many of them in towns and villages in the Ganges plain. The capital cities of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, and Pakistan and several other cities with more than a million inhabitants are vulnerable to damage from some of these future earthquakes"
The devastating impact to life and property caused by natural disasters in the Himalayan region was painfully evident during the devastating cloud burst in Uttarakhand which also claimed over a thousand lives.
As pointed out by Jay Mazoomdar in an article for Firstpost at the time, "way too many properties and lives came in the way of the Mandakini and Alakananda on 16 and 17 June because we placed ourselves where we were never supposed to. That part, the part that made a natural calamity an enormous human tragedy, is entirely and unquestionably manmade." He added that the arguments of development hardly came into play, given the ecologically sensitive nature of the region.
Following the Uttarakhand tragedy, many promises were made to review development work and work towards creating an ecologically viable model that would no longer endanger the area.

Given the magnitude of the Uttarkashi disaster, it is not difficult to imagine how much more destructive an earthquake in the same area would be. Given the government's cavalier attitude toward earthquake safety and development in the Himalayas, we may be facing our very own humanitarian disaster -- and it won't even have to be the 'big one' for it to really hurt.

Bollywood Mr. Perfectionist Aamir Khan has returned back to Mumbai with his wife Kiran Rao and their son Azad Khan from their holiday at Disney Land, USA. Kiran dressed in casual attire, was spotted heading out of the airport with her son Azad, while Aamir Khan walked behind them. This vacation proved to be a spell breaker for Azad as the little toddler has finally stepped out of his tiny shell and is all cheerful and not camera shy any more.
Whenever shutterbugs have spotted Azad, the Jr. Perfectionist often stayed quiet and hid behind his parents or just avoided the camera completely. But here for the first time we see Azad facing the camera with a cute smile on his face. Not only that, but he even shook a leg in front of the cameras at the airport! How adorable is that?! Jr. Khan looked really adorable in his yellow printed tshirt, as he saw the shutterbugs flashing their cameras at him, Azad looked at his mom Kiran for approval and as she nodded, Azad broke into a dance at the airport. The three year old’s this energetic cute act surely surprised the cameramen. Soon, the Khan family happily walked out of the airport towards their car.
